Good morning sunshine!
I'm writing this post at 5:05am and that's waaaay to early for me to be awake, so I'm feeling a little loopy! Mornings are not typically my time to shine, but Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings this week, I woke up at 4:18am. (Okay, well, 4:18am was when I first looked at my phone.) How does that happen?
This isn't a good thing as I canNOT fall back to sleep once this brain gets to cranking. I try. Sometimes if I count backwards from 100, imagining I'm painting each number, I come close. But usually, around number 79, I find myself spinning out and making to-do lists, priority lists and lists about lists.
So, Wednesday night I prayed to sleep "past 4:18".
You guessed it, Thursday morning I woke up, looked at my phone and yes, it was 4:19am. I couldn't make this stuff up. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR, right?
So, I was much more specific in my sleep request last night and was shooting for 6:00. I settled for 4:29am.
And now I'm here, typing and listening to Brutus snore so loudly the windows are rattling. Remember this guy? He's pretty excited to find out he just won the Hurl-a-Squirrel prize from the Rockin' Pet Party over at The House at Bluebird Lane!! It's National Pet Week!
(well, he WILL be excited, but I don't have the heart to wake him up and tell him.)
Moving on.... my dilemma is this.
THESE, to be more precise.
Ignore the ugly sink, faucet, counter-tops and popcorn ceiling. It's the two oddly sized windows, in the corner, in my kitchen, that I'm referring to. We've lived in this house for 7 years and nearly every day I wonder what to do with this decorating nightmare of a corner.
I guess if it were up to me and we didn't live in suburbia, I'd leave all of our windows open and uncovered, which is probably why they've been left for so long. I don't think the neighbors mind the occasional view of me washing dishes or cutting vegetables, right? Notice that there aren't even screens on the window? (this is my doing)

Notice the funky houseplants? I seriously think the one on the left was given to me after a car accident in high school and the other my Mom gave me when I went to college. No kidding, you can't kill these things.
Notice the completely off-center light fixture? I don't know who to blame for that, but it doesn't line up with anything. at. all.
The cute pendant light used to be a can light but I converted it with one of those easy-peasy kits from Lowe's. The glass was red before as well, but some Krylon took care of that.

Dress the windows? Add a cute little chandelier with lots of sparkle? Help!
Tomorrow is Saturday; surely I'll sleep until 6am?!? Happy weekend my friends!!!

Υes for the sparkly chandelier! And maybe adding some beautiful colorful plants in tea cups?
ReplyDeleteI love that idea! Now of course, I won't be able to keep those plants alive! Ha!
Deletegwen is here and she and i are confident in our abilities to take your plants to the grave. send them our way.
ReplyDeleteI hope you guys are having fun - wish I was there sipping vino with ya! Every time I think those things are thru (as in, I haven't watered them in 6 months) I give them a bit of water, trim off the dead leaves and they grow down the cabinets! Crazy! Can they be my 'pay it forward'? Again, be careful what you wish for - ha! ~L
DeleteHa~! Oh my lawd. Get a cat. It'll kill em.
DeleteDid all those crosses give you super powers? OMGSH... I'm sorry. I hope God doesn't give me Strep again for saying that...
My cat ignores them completely. It's funny you mention that... I always wondered if there was some kind of rule about decorating with crosses. I mean I like the shape and all but I'm more 'spiritual' than 'religious'. Do you think I'll go to hell if I sell them at my garage sale? What if I sell them for less than 1/3 retail?
DeleteI am not the one to ask about window dressings as I'm hopeless at them, but a chandelier would be pretty. Going through the same phase of 4 am wakings - there's not enough caffeine to overcome it!
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking of swapping out the chandy from the wine cellar (okay, that's just a fancy way of saying 'little closet that we keep wine in'). What is UP with us being UP that early? I did sleep until exactly 6am this morning. Tomorrow I think I'll ask for noon - like that would EVER happen! Redbull and iced coffees are my friends! ~L
DeleteThe creative mind never sleeps, except if you name is Brutus.
ReplyDeleteMy SIL has a window area like that, can't think of what she has in it, and doesn't DebbieDoos have a corner sink area to peek at? Other than that I'm fresh out of inspiration - I'm with Brutus, I want to sleep........
~Bliss~
So, true! I'm going to go stalk Debbie now. Get some extra sleep for me!!
DeleteLove the chandelier idea and what about putting a frosted like film on the windows they have some different types in home depot
ReplyDeleteThanks! It's foggy out this morning, so I'm getting a little preview of what that would look like - ha! ~L
DeleteI think that you absolutely need window treatments, they can make a room. I roman shade would look good. You could do a simple fixed roman shade/valance. I have seen several no sew versions that you can even make from tablecloths. A pretty new fixture would be great too. What about a small lantern style fixture? Tina at The Enchanted Home had some great fixtures. Wish I had your green thumb, I do nit have good luck with indoor plants.
ReplyDeleteI would add molding over those windows. I would add a 10" piece of plywood and then crown on top of that to fill up the space. Paint it all white. Instant drama. I would add a ceiling medallion to center the light and a linen drum shade close to the ceiling :)
ReplyDeleteJust a few thoughts.
blessings,
karianne
Karianne - LOVE the medallion idea - it never occurred to me! I might need a little carpentry help with the rest - but hopefully I'll get something done soon!! Thanks for the suggestions! ~L
DeleteI think a sparkly chandelier would look great! And I would definitely put some kind of shade up; I'd be weirded out that some night time creepers were peepin' on me while I washed my dishes!
ReplyDeleteHa! I don't think anyone out there is bored enough to watch me do dishes!! I'll keep ya posted on what I come up with!! ~L
DeleteI think Karianne's ideas are wonderful! I bought a cheap drumshade light in a light grey color at TJ Maxx about 3 months ago...I love it. Maybe you could put up a couple of nice bamboo roman shades in your windows, that might add a nice touch of texture there. For behind the tap, maybe a white pitcher (you can buy one cheap at Tar-Jay) and fill with real or fake flowers (I bought some pretty fake white tulips at Michael's a month ago,(I have them on my dining room table in a glass vase )- you can't kill them!!! HaHa!) Take care!
ReplyDeleteHeather, I agree - her ideas always rock! I think I may go with some sort of shade until I can get that great molding and plywood idea to take shape! Thanks! ~Lori
